Albufeira | Portugal 2013
From sun-soaked beaches to historic city streets, our trip was the perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and unforgettable flavors.
The final stop on our 2013 European adventure was Portugal, where we chose to unwind in Albufeira, a picturesque town in the Algarve region along Portugal’s southern coast. The Algarve is famous for its stunning cliffs, golden beaches, and hidden sea grottos, as well as its charming fishing villages and warm Mediterranean climate. After weeks of exploring bustling cities and historic sites, it was wonderful to have some built-in relaxation time to slow down and soak it all in.
We spent our days lounging by the pool, wandering through Albufeira’s quaint streets, and sampling the region’s delicious cuisine. The beaches here are unforgettable, dotted with towering limestone rock formations and secret grottoes carved by the Atlantic over centuries. One morning, we carefully navigated a sandy path down to the shore—stroller in tow—and were rewarded with a secluded stretch of sand and sparkling blue waters.
Dining in Albufeira was a highlight in itself. We discovered a local restaurant that quickly became a favorite. The chicken curry, infused with the Algarve’s unique spices and fresh local ingredients, was so memorable that we still talk about it today. Sampling regional dishes like fresh seafood, piri-piri chicken, and grilled fish gave us a true taste of Portugal’s rich culinary culture.
After a few days of sun, sea, and relaxation, we hopped on a train north to Lisbon, the country’s historic and vibrant capital. There, we spent a couple of days exploring the city’s cobblestone streets, enjoying panoramic views from the hills, and marveling at the tiled façades and centuries-old architecture that make Lisbon so distinct. Before long, it was time to board our flight back to Florida, leaving Portugal with memories of stunning beaches, incredible food, and a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
